The Citroën CX is a large, front-engined, front-wheel-drive executive car manufactured and marketed by Citroën from 1974 to 1991. Production models were either a standard wheelbase or a stretched, more luxurious, four-door fastback saloon, as well as a station wagon (estate), on the longer wheelbase.

The sensational CX initially came with warmed-over DS pushrod engines instead of the triple-rotor Wankel or the twin-cam flat-four planned in cahoots with NSU, but it would eventually come alive with the GTi. Ultimately, the late-'80s 168bhp Turbo could propel the car's highly streamlined bodyshell to a heady 138mph.

The CX's 4- and 5-speed transverse manual gearbox was completely new - and apparently extremely well-executed and used on several other cars, but this meant that the only new component of the whole car was a rather modest one.

Its bodywork, styled by Citroën's celebrated Robert Opron, was refined via wind tunnel, and the CX name referenced the French equivalent of Cd, the notation for 'coefficient of drag' in relation to aerodynamic design. As a bonus, the CX also inherited speed- and lock-sensitive variable-assist steering technology from the superlative Citroen SM.
